So often, when we onboard new students or staff, we get bogged down in the technical aspects of their new role and forget about the human element. This session focuses on reimagining the onboarding process to foreground relational and transformational considerations while still addressing transactional needs. Using research from both management and higher education, the session will facilitate participant reflection, application, and action planning to consider how we can make onboarding more effective. This webinar is presented by ACPA's Senior-Level Community of Practice (SLCOP).

Presenters:

Dr. Jeri Heileman (she, her, hers) is an assistant professor and holds a doctorate in educational leadership. Throughout her 30+ years in P-20 institutions, she has experienced success building organizational communities and developing high functioning teams focused on student success. Her research currently focuses on the impact of strategic onboarding practices to strengthen connectedness.

Chris Rosales (he, his, him) is an assistant professor of practice with a student affairs background and experiences focused on teaching and curriculum development, leadership skill-building, supporting identity-based and multicultural student organizations, and creative marketing. His work currently centers around facilitating student development and building authentic relationships through advising and mentorship.

Tom Murray (he, his, him) is an associate professor of practice and the course director for the institution’s first-year seminar. Tom has over 20 years of experience in higher education in both student affairs and teaching roles and has onboarded and supervised over 500 employees. Tom has presented at regional, national, and international conferences on a variety of topics related to leadership, management, and teaching and learning.
