The annual Summit for Black Student Affairs Professionals at the ACPA Conference provides professional development, fellowship, and networking opportunities for senior, mid-level, and new professionals of African descent (e.g., African Americans, Caribbean, South American) through informal and formal dialogue, mentoring, and workshopping. This year's summit will focus on recentering Blackness, agency, Black joy, and thriving, while supporting participants in their ability to imagine, plan, and act in ways that dismantle barriers for Black student affairs professionals.
NOTE: This Pre-Convention Workshop will take place over two days:
The Dean of Students Institute, hosted by the ACPA Senior-Level Community of Practice, is a dynamic program designed to equip educational leaders with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel. Through expert-led conversations, interactive sessions, and collaborative networking opportunities, participants will develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the potential for the role of a Dean of Students in higher education. Attendees will leave the institute empowered and ready to create a nurturing environment that promotes success and well-being.
Everyone has implicit bias, and it can be managed. In this interactive workshop, participants will use an interdisciplinary framework to conceptualize implicit bias by engaging in brain exercises and discussing brain function. They will identify the prevalence of implicit bias by exploring its manifestations and learn about the continuum of impacts resulting from unchecked implicit bias by discussing specific points on the continuum (microaggressions, stereotype threat, social identity threat, derivative discrimination, implicit dehumanization). Participants will discuss evidence-based strategies to recognize and address implicit bias at individual and systemic levels for sustainable change.
NOTE: This Pre-Convention Workshop will take place over two days:
Join the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals for a transformative conversation about the future of LGBTQIA2S+ communities in higher education. We will share better, best, and promising practices. We will focus on community building and innovative strategies to address increasingly hostile climates for LGBTQIA2S+ people on campus. Together, we will imagine new possibilities for creating more just campus communities.
NOTE: This Pre-Convention Workshop will take place over two days:
This eight hour pre-conference workshop inspires participants to improve their writing by: discovering ways to integrate SIRJD concepts into their scholarship, strategically developing a writing plan, identifying barriers preventing their writing projects from moving forward, and connecting with experts who publish in the Student Affairs and Higher Education literature. In addition to working together in small, facilitated groups determined by similar writing goals or interests, participants will spend time in conversation with ACPA Publication Editors and Grant Reviewers.
This session will begin by presenting current trends and issues impacting women leaders in higher education's changing landscape. Facilitators will create a platform for participants to engage deeply in critical dialogue and reflection on professional practice. Next, participants will re-envision and conceptualize their capacity and value as leaders utilizing design think principles- exploring and defining ideal career paths, identifying tangible steps in reaching career goals, and building an intentional and actionable professional development plan to foster personal/professional flourishing.
You may use the phrase brave space, but how well do you understand the framework this term was coined to describe or its theoretical and philosophical underpinnings? Join us for an engaging workshop to reflect on how brave space was created and has evolved over time. You will leave with new and deeper insights and skills that will help you to act in ways that promote courageous engagement in DEI learning.
Pre-Convention Workshops will be announced in November. You may pre-register for a workshop now. The International Office will contact you when workshops are announced for you to pick a Pre-Convention Workshop.

This gathering brings together Indigenous Student Affairs professionals, whether from Indigenous units or elsewhere in their institutions, to explore current opportunities and challenges facing Indigenous students, staff and faculty. This session offers an opportunity for Indigenous practitioners and scholars at all career stages to connect, learn from each other and reflect on the work that has been done and the work still to be done.
How do the recent decisions by SCOTUS impact student affairs practitioners? Legislative and case law decisions are ever evolving and changing the way Student Affairs practitioners work with students. These decisions impact how practitioners work with students, policies, and procedures. Keeping up to date with legislative and case law decisions that impact practitioners is a grand effort. This workshop pulls them all together for you. Participants will understand recent case law and legislative decisions and how they impact their work.
In this session, participants will review a model for critical trauma-informed supervision of student affairs professional staff. Grounded in relevant literature and in experiences of Women of Color student affairs staff who have worked with white supervisors, this session will offer practical strategies for supervising in a trauma-aware and identity-conscious manner. Though the primary audience for this workshop are white student affairs staff who currently supervise other professional staff, anyone is welcome to attend, learn, and contribute.
